  • 1. I am a 46-year-old man with hypertension. I recently started taking Inderal for my blood pressure. I feel fine and my pressure is way down, but I can no longer get my pulse up when I work out on my treadmill or bike. Does that mean I won't benefit from exercise anymore?

  • 3. Ask the doctor. My doctor recently put me on Tenormin because my blood pressure was getting high. Now, when I run or row, I can't get my heart rate much above 115 beats per minute even though my peak heart rate should be 136. Is the beta blocker keeping me from getting the full benefit of exercise?

  • 6. On call. I found your November 2002 article on maximum heart rate very interesting. But since I take Tenormin for high blood pressure, the new formula doesn't seem to apply to me. How can I figure out my maximum rate? I'm 48 years old, and I don't take any other drugs or have any other problems.

  • 7. Ask the doctor. At 80 years old, I am in relatively good health, aside from recent diagnosis of high blood pressure. Taking a beta blocker and watching my salt has brought my blood pressure down into the normal range. During a period of extreme heat this summer, my ankles were more swollen than usual, and my weight jumped three pounds in just two days. Was that because of the heat, or did salt have something to do with it?
