  • 44. On call. I developed severe ulcerative colitis in my late teens, and I had my entire colon and rectum removed at age 24. It was certainly worthwhile, since I adjusted easily and I've been healthy ever since. But now I'm 52, and I'm starting to think about prostate cancer. My doctor obviously can't do a rectal exam, and he doesn't want to do a PSA test because he says he won't be able to send me for a prostate biopsy if the test is high. Do I have any options?

  • 47. Ask the doctor. For several years now, my lower legs have been painful and somewhat swollen, especially at the end of the day. My doctor says that my veins are not getting the blood back to my heart like they used to, but that it is just part of aging (I am 72 years old). He tells me to put my feet up as much as possible, but that's not very practical when you have a lot to do! Isn't there anything else I could try?

Since it happens so infrequently and has been going on for years, my doctor says I don't need anything other than medicine to keep it under control. Now I need to have two operations, one to fix my cataracts and another to remove part of my colon. Should I start worrying about these heart pains?

  • 52. Ask the doctor. I need to catheterize myself because of bladder problems. In April 2007, I had five stents put in my heart and started taking Plavix. Since then, I sometimes see a light tinge of blood in the catheter bag, though lately the blood flow has been more substantial. The book "Worst Pills, Best Pills" says Plavix should be used for only a limited time, but my internist tells me I should be on it for the rest of my life. I am 88 years old and take aspirin (325 mg) every day. How long will I need to take Plavix?

  • 60. Ask the doctor. My total cholesterol level is well below 200. My LDL is low, my HDL high, and my triglycerides and homocysteine are both in the "desirable" range. The one thing out of whack is that my lipoprotein(a) level is more than double the "normal" limit. My cardiologist wants me to take niacin to bring it down. I can't find any information on how serious a problem this is, especially in the context of otherwise good cholesterol levels and a healthy lifestyle. (I exercise 5 days a week; eat a low-fat, high-fiber diet; and am not overweight.).
