  • 1. By the way, doctor...I've been trying to lose weight on my own for years. I'm interested in trying something over the Internet, partly because it seems more private than other weight-loss programs. Any chance an Internet program could work?

    [No Abstract]   [Full Text] [Related]

  • 2. Ask the doctor. I've been fighting obesity all my life. I'm a 62-year-old woman and every five years or so I lose about 20 pounds, then slowly gain it back. I've heard that this "yo-yo" pattern of weight loss, weight gain, weight loss, may be more dangerous than just staying heavy. Should I give up trying to lose weight?

  • 3. By the way doctor... The doctor I've had for over 40 years just retired. I've found another one--he's awfully young, but it seems like everyone is these days! With a new doctor, do you think I need to get a complete physical? I'm 83, take medication to keep my blood pressure under control and lower my cholesterol, but I'm basically health--knock wood.

  • 4. By the way, doctor. I've entered menopause. I'm not sure which stage at this point, but I haven't had periods for about a year, and I'm having a few symptoms--some hot flashes and sleepless nights. But what concerns me most is that I seem to have lost muscle tone and cellulite seems to be taking over. Is this related to loss of estrogen in menopause? Is it just something I have to accept and live with? I'm also on a low-dose thyroid medicine.

  • 5. Ask the doctors. I've just been diagnosed with hypertension, and my doctor has prescribed an old-fashioned diuretic and told me to cut out salt and lose weight. I'm trying. But in the meantime, shouldn't I be getting a more advanced drug like an ACE inhibitor?

    [No Abstract]   [Full Text] [Related]

  • 6. On call. I am trying to decide between a radical prostatectomy and radioactive seed therapy for my newly diagnosed prostate cancer. All the doctors I've consulted say I have very early disease (PSA 4.9, Gleason score 6) and that I should be cured either way. I'm basing my decision on side effects, but I need more information on one thing I learned about on the Internet, penile shortening.

  • 7. By the way, doctor... Exercise: nothing to fear. I'm 62, pretty trim, but I don't particularly enjoy exercise. My wife keeps telling me I need to be more physically active. But I've heard of several people who died during or shortly after exercise. If I don't need to lose weight, why should I expose myself to danger doing something I don't enjoy?

  • 9. By the way, doctor...I'm a few years past menopause, and I take a statin because of high cholesterol. My doctor has broached the subject of whether I might need to take something else to lower my risk for osteoporosis, but I've read that statins help prevent that problem. Can't I tell the doctor I don't need another pill?

My doctor said my stress test results were normal. But I've read that heart disease is harder to diagnose in women than in men. Should I get more tests?

  • 13. By the way, doctor... I've had a bothersome cough for years, and my doctor hasn't been able to make a diagnosis. Two chest x-rays have been normal. I find that coughing can produce embarrassing interruptions when I'm on the phone or in ordinary conversations. My family is worried about what might be going on. I'm not a smoker, so this isn't a smoker's cough I am talking about. Can you help me?

However, I still have several symptoms of low thyroid--fatigue, difficulty losing weight, sensitivity to cold, and constipation. My doctor doesn't seem concerned with the symptoms, as long as my blood tests are normal. But I'm frustrated. Is there anything I can do?

  • 20. On call. I've been taking Zocor since my heart attack in 2006. My cholesterol count has come way down, and I haven't had any heart problems. In the past few months, however, I've had some muscle aches. My blood tests don't show any muscle damage, but my doctor says Zocor may still be causing the problem. He wants me to stop Zocor for a while, but I'm worried about my heart. Is it safe for me to stop?
