  • 1. On call. When my wife was in the hospital with a kidney infection four years ago, her doctor came in to see her every day, but when I caught pneumonia this year, my doctor turned me over to a hospital doctor until I got home. I did get good care, but I missed seeing my regular M.D. What do you think of this way of doing things?

  • 9. Ask the doctor. My blood pressure is high when I first get up in the morning, generally around 150/80, but always drops back to normal (around 120/60) by 9 a.m. and stays that way throughout the day. I take 150 milligrams of Avapro in the morning and again in the evening, along with a diuretic in the morning. I check my blood pressure at home using a meter that was verified in my cardiologist's office. My doctor says I shouldn't worry about the temporary high morning blood pressure. What do you think?

  • 10. Ask the doctor. When I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation four years ago, my doctor put me on a calcium-channel blocker. A year or so later, after I had angioplasty and got a stent, my doctor switched me to twice-a-day sotalol. Now I feel tired all the time and have gained weight, even though I feel like I am eating less. Can this be from the sotalol?

My doctor gave me Zocor, which helped. But I developed muscle aches, so he switched me to Zetia. I feel fine again, but I'd like to know what you think.

  • 13. Ask the doctor. I haven't had such good luck with my heart--a heart attack ten years ago and angioplasty with two stents inserted last year. Would it make sense for me to have a yearly stress test? If I had been doing that after my heart attack, maybe my doctor would have seen the blockage and we could have done something about it earlier.

I urged her to get a stress test but she says her doctor told her that the treadmill test isn't good at diagnosing heart trouble in women. Is this the case? Thanks to the treadmill test, I avoided a heart attack. Now I want the same thing for my wife!
