  • 1. By the way, doctor. A recent test showed I have some hip osteopenia. Now every day I take two Tums Ultra (800 mg of calcium) plus a multivitamin (200 mg of calcium). I also get a total of 800 International Units (IU) of vitamin D daily. I've been advised that Tums aren't sufficient. Do I need to switch to a more expensive calcium supplement?

  • 3. By the way, doctor. In the February 2005 issue, you said that the body couldn't assimilate more than 500 milligrams (mg) of calcium at a time. How long does this take? I want to allow enough time between taking my 500-mg calcium supplement and drinking a glass of milk.

  • 6. I am a woman in my early 60s and I have osteopenia, for which my doctor prescribed four Citracal caplets with vitamin D every day. This provides 800 international units (IU) of vitamin D. I get another 266 IU of vitamin D from a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement. I read recently that people who don't get 15 minutes of sunlight every day should probably take 4,000 IU of D daily. But that is twice the safe upper limit of 2,000 IU. What are the dangers of taking 4,000 IU daily? Are there side effects and warning signs that you're taking too much? What amount would you recommend?
