  • 2. On call. I've been taking Zocor since my heart attack in 2006. My cholesterol count has come way down, and I haven't had any heart problems. In the past few months, however, I've had some muscle aches. My blood tests don't show any muscle damage, but my doctor says Zocor may still be causing the problem.   • 5. Ask the doctor. In October 2007, I had three Cypher stents placed in my left anterior descending artery. My doctor told me to take Plavix and aspirin indefinitely. Now I need to have a hernia repaired. My surgeon refuses to operate while I'm taking Plavix and aspirin, and said I would have to stop taking the two drugs five to six days before the operation. My cardiologist says that stopping the Plavix and aspirin, as well as the stress of the operation itself, would throw me into a "hypercoagulable state," greatly increasing my chance of developing a blood clot inside one of the stents. What should I do?

  • 8. On call. I developed severe ulcerative colitis in my late teens, and I had my entire colon and rectum removed at age 24. It was certainly worthwhile, since I adjusted easily and I've been healthy ever since. But now I'm 52, and I'm starting to think about prostate cancer. My doctor obviously can't do a rectal exam, and he doesn't want to do a PSA test because he says he won't be able to send me for a prostate biopsy if the test is high. Do I have any options?

  • 19. Ask the doctor. During a recent appointment, my cardiologist heard a sound in my neck and sent me for a ultrasound, which showed a narrowing in my carotid artery.   • 20. Ask the doctor. My blood pressure has wide swings each day. It can go as high as 210/110 with even minor stress like grocery shopping, then fall to 100/50, which makes me tired and needing rest. I take 15 mg of isosorbide dinitrate and a slow-release nitrate for angina. I also take 10 mg of atenolol (Tenormin) to slow my heart rate. My doctor says I'm just a "reactive person." My diet is excellent, and I try to keep active. Could my adrenal glands have anything to do with this?
