  • 4. On call. I developed severe ulcerative colitis in my late teens, and I had my entire colon and rectum removed at age 24. It was certainly worthwhile, since I adjusted easily and I've been healthy ever since. But now I'm 52, and I'm starting to think about prostate cancer.
