  • 3. On call. I am a 64-year-old man, quite healthy except for high blood pressure, which was diagnosed last year. My doctor gave me Hydro-Diuril, which was only partly successful. Then he added Prinivil, but I had to stop it because of a terrible cough. Now he wants me to take Lopressor, but I've read the package insert and I'm worried about side effects--especially sexual problems, since I already have problems in that area. Do I have to take the pills?

  • 7. Ask the doctor. I am a 78-year-old woman and have been taking high blood pressure medications for many years. Maybe it s because I've lost a lot of weight I used to be quite heavy but my blood pressure has fallen to about 110/70 mm Hg. My doctor tells me that the lower my blood pressure, the better. But I worry that it's getting too low. What do you think?

  • 8. Ask the doctor. After being diagnosed with high blood pressure several years ago, I started taking diltiazem and Atacand. The results were good, giving me an average blood pressure of 110/65. I recently developed gastroenteritis and aspiration pneumonia. While I was in the hospital, my blood pressure got so low I was told to stop taking these medications. I have been off them since, and my blood pressure has remained normal, averaging 105/65. How can this be? Will high blood pressure return?

  • 11. Ask the doctor. My blood pressure has wide swings each day. It can go as high as 210/110 with even minor stress like grocery shopping, then fall to 100/50, which makes me tired and needing rest. I take 15 mg of isosorbide dinitrate and a slow-release nitrate for angina. I also take 10 mg of atenolol (Tenormin) to slow my heart rate. My doctor says I'm just a "reactive person." My diet is excellent, and I try to keep active. Could my adrenal glands have anything to do with this?

The good news is that it showed no evidence of heart problems, but during the test my blood pressure quickly shop up to 190 mm Hg. Usually, it's about 35/90 mm Hg. The doctor doing the test didn't seem too alarmed, but I'm concerned.
