  • 2. I'm 76 and an avid walker. Lately, though, I've noticed a burning sensation and pain on the ball of my foot when I walk or stand--it's even worse if I'm barefoot or in socks. It feels like I'm walking on pebbles. The pain goes away when I'm off my feet. What might cause this?

  • 4. By the way, Doctor. I'm a 52-year-old tennis player who needs a hip replacement. The orthopedists in my area do a metal-ball-in-polyethylene-cup replacement that I'm told lasts 10-15 years. But I've heard that metal-ball-in-metal-cup replacements last longer. What do you think?

  • 8. On call. I've been taking Zocor since my heart attack in 2006. My cholesterol count has come way down, and I haven't had any heart problems. In the past few months, however, I've had some muscle aches. My blood tests don't show any muscle damage, but my doctor says Zocor may still be causing the problem. He wants me to stop Zocor for a while, but I'm worried about my heart. Is it safe for me to stop?

  • 9. I had an ultrasound of my heart recently, and the technician performing it wouldn't tell me anything about what he saw. He said I would have to wait for my doctor to call me. It's been two days now, and I'm still waiting. Don't you think patients should be able to get a least some preliminary information sooner? The same thing happened to me last year when I had an MRI.

  • 10. By the way, doctor. My cholesterol numbers are as follows: Total-220; HDL-82 (it's been anywhere from 75 to 85 for the last 20 years); LDL-150; total-to-HDL ratio-2.7. I'm 85, and the heart doctor wants to put me on a statin. I feel great; I'm not overweight, and I don't have any heart problems. I don't take any medications except a daily 81-mg baby aspirin. Do I need to take a statin?

  • 11. On call. I am a 64-year-old man, and I've always been proud of my perfect health record. I've also been proud of my full head of hair, even after the gray started creeping in. Four months ago I caught pneumonia and spent eight days in the hospital (three in intensive care). It took a while, but I'm finally back to normal - except that my hair is falling out. It comes out in clumps when I shampoo or even comb it, and it's gotten noticeably thin all over. I remember reading about Propecia in your newsletter but I don't have the old issue. Should I try the medication?

  • 12. By the way, doctor... I've had a bothersome cough for years, and my doctor hasn't been able to make a diagnosis. Two chest x-rays have been normal. I find that coughing can produce embarrassing interruptions when I'm on the phone or in ordinary conversations. My family is worried about what might be going on. I'm not a smoker, so this isn't a smoker's cough I am talking about. Can you help me?

  • 13. By the way, doctor... Exercise: nothing to fear. I'm 62, pretty trim, but I don't particularly enjoy exercise. My wife keeps telling me I need to be more physically active. But I've heard of several people who died during or shortly after exercise. If I don't need to lose weight, why should I expose myself to danger doing something I don't enjoy?

  • 15. By the way, doctor. I'm 84 and had a small heart attack last year. My kids tell me I should be taking a statin. But at my age, I don't see how any medication is going to clean out my arteries and get rid of my atherosclerosis. What do you think?

  • 16. By the way doctor... The doctor I've had for over 40 years just retired. I've found another one--he's awfully young, but it seems like everyone is these days! With a new doctor, do you think I need to get a complete physical? I'm 83, take medication to keep my blood pressure under control and lower my cholesterol, but I'm basically health--knock wood.

  • 17. On call. I had a hip replacement operation eight years ago and I've had a wonderful result. Now I'm ready to have my other hip done. Last time, I had blood-thinning shots in the hospital, but this time my orthopedist also wants me to take a pill at home for a month. Is it really necessary?
