  • 23. Ask the doctor. Recently I read that aspirin can actually increase a person's risk for a stroke by causing bleeding in the brain. I have atrial fibrillation and my doctor wants me to take a blood thinner - if not warfarin, then at least aspirin. I've already had a heart attack and I don't want to run the risk of a stroke, so I have refused. What should I do?

  • 25. Ask the doctor. I'm 78 years old. I've known for years that I have a narrowing of the aortic valve of my heart. My doctors are always asking me whether I have chest pain, fainting spells, or any other special symptoms. Until recently, the answer has been no. A few days ago, however, I was washing dishes in my kitchen, and I suddenly felt lightheaded and fell to the ground. I didn't black out, but I almost did. Now my doctor is saying that I should have my aortic valve replaced. Isn't this rather an extreme response to just one spell of lightheadedness?

  • 30. Ask the doctor. I haven't had such good luck with my heart--a heart attack ten years ago and angioplasty with two stents inserted last year. Would it make sense for me to have a yearly stress test? If I had been doing that after my heart attack, maybe my doctor would have seen the blockage and we could have done something about it earlier.

  • 32. Ask the doctor. I'm a 51-year-old man with no risk factors for heart disease other than being male. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are fine. I exercise, and my diet is pretty good. I've never smoked. Yet I recently underwent a triple bypass for sudden chest pain. What could have caused this blockage and can I prevent future problems?

  • 33. Ask the doctor. One day while I was gardening, I either slipped, hit my head, and passed out, or I passed out, fell, and hit my head. Since we couldn't tell, my doctors recommended I get a defribillator as "insurance" in case a heart rhythm problem was the cause. I have had the defribillator for eight years now, and it has never gone off. The battery is almost done and my doctor wants to put in a new battery. At age 86, I'd rather not have the procedure, the routine checkups are a hassle, and all of this is expensive. Could I just let the battery run down, then either leave the device in place or have it taken out?

I've started having trouble with my erections, and now I want to try Viagra. My doctor gave me a prescription, but my wife won't let me fill it. Is Viagra safe for me?

  • 40. Ask the doctor. I've been fighting obesity all my life. I'm a 62-year-old woman and every five years or so I lose about 20 pounds, then slowly gain it back. I've heard that this "yo-yo" pattern of weight loss, weight gain, weight loss, may be more dangerous than just staying heavy. Should I give up trying to lose weight?
