    Abstract:
    A new adult community mental handicap service in the Lewisham and North Southwark health District (population 318,000) was established in 1983. A comprehensive standardised multi-dimensional assessment was made of the 233 referrals in the first five years of the service. This study describes the systematic monitoring of the psychiatric component of the service and the importance of evaluation.
