  • Title: Responding to the developmental consequences of genetic conditions: the importance of pediatric primary care.
    Author: Cooley WC.
    Journal: Am J Med Genet; 1999 Jun 25; 89(2):75-80. PubMed ID: 10559761.
    Abstract:
This article characterizes the critical role of the primary care physician in the identification, initial evaluation, and management of children with developmental disabilities. Problems of definition and epidemiology are reviewed and linked to issues of referral and eligibility for services and supports. Developmental screening methods afford opportunities for early identification, whereas chronic condition management in primary care defines a more explicit role for the pediatric primary care provider.
