Abstract: Recently, there has been a resurgence in the interest of the role of the appendix in ulcerative colitis. The lesion of appendix in ulcerative colitis is reviewed. Surgical studies were mainly reported in western countries and endoscopic studies were mainly reported in Japan. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest a central role of the appendix in development of ulcerative colitis.
