    Abstract:
Effects of low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs) containing norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol on serum levels of progesterone and pituitary gonadotropins were studies. Serum gonadotropin and progesterone levels were determined in women who received OCs containing either 1 or .5 mg norethindrone in combination with 35 mcg ethinyl estradiol for longer than 18 months. No midcycle surges of luteinizing hormone (LH) were noted and no LH levels exceeded 225 ng/ml in the 10 patients treated with 1 mg norethindrone plus 35 mcg ethinyl estradiol. Follicle stimulating hormone levels were elevated during the first 1/2 of each cycle. Progesterone titers were usually less than 1 ng/ml. 5 of 6 patients treated with .5 mg norethindrone plus 35 mcg ethinyl estradiol had no midcycle LH surge and the level never exceeded 250 ng/ml. It is concluded that ovulation probably did not occur in the patients treated with these formulations.
