Abstract: Loss of communicative ability is one of the most devastating handicaps associated with stroke. The goals of therapy require continuous adjustment. Early ambulation facilitates breathing, chewing and swallowing, which are important factors in voice control. Hearing and vision should also receive concentrated attention. Formal speech therapy should begin when the patient shows an interest in regaining speech.
