  • Title: Oral ganciclovir approved.
Journal: AIDS Treat News; 1995 Jan 06; (No 214):1. PubMed ID: 11362183.
    Abstract:
Oral ganciclovir has been approved for marketing by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), eliminating the need for daily intravenous injections for the maintenance stage of CMV retinitis treatment. (Intravenous infusions are still necessary for the induction stage.) Since the oral drug is somewhat less effective, it is only indicated for those, "for whom the risk of more rapid disease progression is balanced by the benefit associated with avoiding daily IV infusions". Many of the side effects of intravenous ganciclovir, especially hematological toxicities, are still present in oral drug.
