  • Title: [Oral ganciclovir for the prevention of illnesses caused by CMV].
    Author: Vianna G.
    Journal: Sidahora; 1995; ():33-4. PubMed ID: 11362479.
    Abstract:
Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common virus of the herpes family, is generally sexually transmitted and affects the retina and various other organs. Ganciclovir, produced by Syntex, is one of two treatments used to control CMV. Foscavir is used when ganciclovir fails. Both medications are taken intravenously and must be taken in high doses. Problems presented by these treatments are reduced mobility and the need for constant medical attention. Oral ganciclovir has been used experimentally for maintenance after the intravenous treatment. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has organized studies to determine the risks and benefits to those using oral ganciclovir. One study enrolled 725 people with AIDS in 19 treatment centers. The results of this prevention study represents a significant advance for controlling symptoms of CMV.
