Title: NIAID launches microbicide development research. National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Journal: AIDS Alert; 1995 Jul; 10(7):95-6. PubMed ID: 11362559. Abstract: The National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has announced the launching of three new research projects on topical microbicides--chemicals a woman can insert in her vagina before sexual intercourse that will kill various STDs, including HIV. NIAID has funded $1.5 million in first-year grants to research teams in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. The antimicrobial products will be targeted against viral, bacterial, or protozoan agents, and may lead to model systems in which to evaluate future products. Researchers in Los Angeles will develop artificial versions of small proteins known as protegrins, which the body produces for fighting bacteria. In Chicago, researchers will focus on chemicals called polysulfated carbohydrates, and will attempt to shed new light on the disease-causing mechanisms of herpes simplex virus, chlamydia, and HIV. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh will study detergents such as nonoxynol-9 and other spermicides for potential microbicidal activity.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
