Title: Clarithromycin prophylaxis against disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex in patients with AIDS. Author: Archange YR, Carrey Z, Zanlungo PG. Journal: J Int Assoc Physicians AIDS Care; 1995 Aug; 1(7):20-2. PubMed ID: 11362747. Abstract: The author presents results of a study concerning clarithromycin prophylaxis against disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in 57 adult patients with AIDS. Forty patients received 500 mg of clarithromycin two times a day by mouth as prophylaxis against disseminated MAC; seventeen patients received no medication. Results show that none of the forty patients developed MAC, while eight of the seventeen patients in the control group did. Data suggest that clarithromycin is successful as a prophylaxis against disseminated MAC in patients with advanced AIDS, and that the 500 mg dosage is well tolerated and not associated with serious side effects.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
