Title: CMV treatment. Journal: Treat Rev; 1995; (no 19):4. PubMed ID: 11362756. Abstract: Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a herpesvirus, can infect the eyes and cause CMV retinitis. Since CMV causes blindness if left untreated, treatment with ganciclovir (Cytovene) or foscarnet (Foscavir) should be initiated as soon as the disease is detected. These medications do not cure CMV, but will control it for a period of time. Ganciclovir and foscarnet are usually administered intravenously via catheter. Those patients receiving continual treatment usually must have a permanent catheter implanted to bypass the potential problems of vein collapse. Researchers, seeking less difficult ways to take the medications, have created a recently-approved pill form of ganciclovir and are now testing ganciclovir implants. Implants are small pellets of the drug that are placed within the eye and replaced every six months. The implants are currently under investigation.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
