  • Title: U.S. House of Representatives moves to dismantle NIH AIDS research program. National Institutes of Health.
Journal: Update Natl Minor AIDS Counc; 1995; ():6. PubMed ID: 11362790.
    Abstract:
The House of Representatives subcommittee on Appropriations for Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies took steps to eliminate designated spending for AIDS research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to the committee chairman, no NIH institute would be required to perform AIDS research. Essentially, funding would be split between the 24 NIH Institutes while the Office of AIDS Research's authority to control NIH AIDS funding would be eliminated. This is viewed by AIDS advocates as a means of breaking up AIDS research into separate pieces without guaranteeing the viability of any single piece. Parties interested in correcting this situation are advised to contact their representative and tell them that AIDS research is the only way to end this epidemic.
