Title: Gov. Wilson again vetoes medicinal use of marijuana. Journal: AIDS Policy Law; 1995 Nov 03; 10(20):8. PubMed ID: 11362864. Abstract: For the second consecutive year, Governor Pete Wilson of California has vetoed legislation that would allow the medical use of marijuana. Under this legislation, people with AIDS could have obtained and used marijuana to lessen wasting syndrome and the effects of antiviral drugs. With a physician's prescription, patients with certain terminal illnesses would have been allowed to grow, obtain, and smoke marijuana for personal use. Californians for Compassionate Use, a coalition of AIDS advocates, filed for a state ballot initiative in 1996. The initiative states that no physician will be punished for recommending the medical use of marijuana, and that State laws against possession and cultivation would not apply to the patient or his/her primary caregiver. The California Medical Association will support the medical use of marijuana if controlled studies show it is effective.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
