  • Title: New NCI director confronts troubled agency. National Cancer Institute.
    Author: Link D.
Journal: GMHC Treat Issues; 1995 Oct; 9(10):9. PubMed ID: 11362920.
    Abstract:
Dr. Richard Klausner, new director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), takes over a troubled agency that has been accused of lackluster science, mismanagement, and no financial accountability. Additionally, NCI's AIDS research is accused of not being integrated with the overall national AIDS effort. The continuation of AIDS funding and NCI's control of these funds are being questioned. Dr. Klausner states that he is aware of these accusations, acknowledges their existence, and has ordered a review of all AIDS expenditures at NCI with a goal of reprogramming and reclassifying the AIDS funding. He also hopes to integrate NCI AIDS programs more closely with the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and other institutes.
