  • Title: Cidofovir recommended for approval for CMV retinitis.
    Author: James JS.
Journal: AIDS Treat News; 1996 Apr 05; (no 244):6-7. PubMed ID: 11363308.
    Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved cidofovir for treatment of CMV retinitis. Cidofovir, developed by Gilead Sciences, is administered intravenously at biweekly intervals, eliminating the need for implanted catheters. Data on long-term use is not yet available. The drug has been found to cause cancer in the mammary glands of female rats; it's safety for women is unknown. Other formulations being tested are direct injection into the eye, as an eyedrop, and as a topical gel for genital herpes and warts. Cidofovir is available free through an expanded use program for patients with relapsing disease or for those who are intolerant to ganciclovir or foscarnet.
