  • Title: Update on antivirals.
Journal: PI Perspect; 1996 Sep; (No 19):7-9. PubMed ID: 11363906.
    Abstract:
Studies using 3-drug combinations were a major focus of the Eleventh International Conference on AIDS in Vancouver. People using the drugs consistently and as prescribed had the longest benefits. Those who did not comply developed resistance. Preliminary clinical results are presented for indinavir (Crixivan), ritonavir (Norvir), nelfinavir (Viracept), 3TC (lamivudine, Epivir), and 1592U89. These studies suggest that the most likely way to achieve viral suppression below detection is to use 3-drug combination therapy (preferably of drugs that have not been used previously). Once achieved, it is believed that appearance of drug resistance may be greatly delayed.
