  • Title: When to start therapy--and what to start with.
    Author: Gallant JE.
Journal: Posit Aware; 1997; 8(1):22-3. PubMed ID: 11364093.
    Abstract:
Guidelines for when to begin treating HIV, and with which combinations of drugs, are still being developed. Antiretrovirals are highly effective when the patient is first diagnosed, but some physicians defer treatment because the patient still feels healthy and side effects from many treatments are intolerable. The goal of any treatment regimen is to drive viral load down to the lowest possible level, prevent immunologic decline and clinical progression, and prolong survival.
