Abstract: The introduction of combination therapies has changed HIV/AIDS from a terminal illness to a chronic manageable condition. The evolution of hope and hopelessness in the HIV/AIDS arena is tracked and related to the current treatment paradigm. Hope is often the essential element for patients coping with a diagnosis of HIV. Patients continue to construct belief systems that include hope and a positive outlook toward the future. The ability to maintain a state of hopefulness is seen as key to physical and emotional survival.
