  • Title: HIV resistance: the new enemy.
    Author: Colvin R.
Journal: Common Factor; 1997 Nov; (No 11):6-7. PubMed ID: 11364845.
    Abstract:
HIV resistance continues to be a concern, particularly with the advent of potent anti-HIV therapies, i.e., protease inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. What is known about resistance to specific drugs and how to remain HIV-sensitive to various drugs are summarized. HIV resistance to nucleoside analogs, protease inhibitors, and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors is explained. HIV-positive patients can avoid developing HIV resistance by using several drugs simultaneously, taking the medications consistently, and having their viral load tested. By using an effective treatment regimen and monitoring its effects, patients should be able to avoid resistance for several years.
