Title: Pelosi bill seeks to expand Medicaid, upgrade State ADAPs. Journal: AIDS Policy Law; 1997 Nov 28; 12(21):1, 16. PubMed ID: 11364871. Abstract: U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) introduced the HIV Treatment Improvement Act to ensure that more people qualify for life-prolonging HIV/AIDS drug therapies. The Act would enhance care under Medicaid and include low-income persons with HIV and AIDS. The legislation reflects more aggressive HIV treatment guidelines for adults and adolescents. Currently, people with HIV cannot qualify for Medicaid unless they meet income criteria and are diagnosed with AIDS. Pelosi's bill allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to designate HIV treatment guidelines and establish mechanisms that ensure that federally funded programs correspond with recommendations. The bill also requires States to adhere to the HHS formulary for AIDS drug assistance programs (ADAPs). The bill takes into account expected savings from a variety of government programs.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
