  • Title: AZT trials in developing countries: what's next?
Journal: AIDS Alert; 1998 Feb; 13(2 Suppl):1-3. PubMed ID: 11365040.
    Abstract:
Initial data from two studies on short-term AZT use to prevent perinatal transmission are expected on January 22, 1998. The studies, in Thailand and Cote d'Ivoire, are the subject of heated ethical debates in the United States, where opponents compare them to the Tuskegee syphilis trials. The researchers conducting the studies say they reflect the reality of AIDS treatment in developing countries, where long-term AZT treatments, which are common here, are simply too expensive. The researchers contend that the cheaper, shorter treatment regimens need to be studied. Although the treatment may not be as effective as the treatment recommended by ACTG 076, many countries are not able to follow the ACTG 076 recommendations because they do not have the expertise, financial resources, and infrastructure for that option.
