Title: Revised CDC guidelines underscore mother's health. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Journal: AIDS Alert; 1998 Apr; 13(4):39-42. PubMed ID: 11365140. Abstract: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its treatment guidelines for preventing perinatal transmission. The new guidelines are a result of advances in treatment and better data on the drugs long-term effects on infants. ACTG 076 proved conclusively that AZT can reduce perinatal transmission by nearly 70 percent, and further studies confirmed its effectiveness. Mother-child transmission rates are now below 4 percent in the United States. The success of the trial led many to conclude that AZT monotherapy was the treatment of choice; however, this is not true. Numerous trials are underway to determine the safety and efficacy of other drugs. General principles for treating pregnant patients are included.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
