Title: Weighing the choices in 'terrible dilemma'. Journal: AIDS Alert; 1998 Apr; 13(4 Suppl):2-3. PubMed ID: 11365147. Abstract: Although breast-feeding can lead to HIV transmission from mothers to infants, international health groups have not issued cohesive policies to deal with its mode of transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) is producing a trio of documents on the subject. Public health programs have long stressed the benefits of breast-feeding, particularly in developing countries where sanitary conditions are poor or mothers cannot afford adequate formula. Often the programs are reluctant to modify their position to encourage HIV-infected mothers to use formula to feed their infants. Formula manufacturers have offered free formula in those areas, and continue to wait for instructions from the world health organizations. Present estimates from UNAIDS show that 1,600 children are infected with HIV by their mothers every day, one-third of those via breast-feeding.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
