Title: Hundred million dollar program for public-private AIDS research and outreach in Africa. Author: James JS. Journal: AIDS Treat News; 1999 May 21; (No 319):3-5. PubMed ID: 11366463. Abstract: Bristol-Myers Squibb announced a 5-year $100 million program to improve HIV/AIDS research and community outreach in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. The program, called Secure the Future, will be directed by scientific and community boards in the countries involved. The emphasis will be on treatment for women and children with AIDS. Another major priority will be to improve care to children who have been orphaned by AIDS. The medical program will also train 100 African physicians and healthcare workers in HIV/AIDS treatment, and bring 50 U.S. physicians to teach in Africa. Major partners in the program are listed and concerns expressed about the program by activists are described.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
