  • Title: Opportunistic infections update.
Journal: Proj Inf Perspect; 1998 Dec; (26):5-6. PubMed ID: 11366497.
    Abstract:
The widespread ability of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has greatly reduced the incidence of HIV-related infection, known as opportunistic infection (OI). However, this means that studying new therapies for the treatment and prevention of OIs has become difficult. Co-infection with HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) has become a larger concern because many HIV drugs may stress the liver. Recommendations for treatment of HCV are given. Co-infection with HIV and hepatitis B (HBV), and its treatment with the anti-HIV drug, 3TC, is also discussed. A study in France demonstrated that even when HIV becomes resistant to 3TC, it may still have an effect, in lower doses, on HBV. More research is needed to find therapies for individuals co-infected with HCV and HIV.
