  • Title: New antiretroviral tactics: transitions or mere trends? An interview with Joep Lange,MD,PhD. Interview by Mark Mascolini.
    Author: Mascolini M.
Journal: J Int Assoc Physicians AIDS Care; 1999 Jul; 5(7):25-9. PubMed ID: 11367133.
    Abstract:
Dr. Joep Lange, former Chief of Clinical Research and Drug Development for the Global Programme on AIDS, was interviewed at the Fourth European Conference on Clinical Aspects and Treatment of HIV Infection. In a one-on-one interview, Dr. Lange was blunt in his assessment of treatment strategies. He believes HAART is not a good term because it is not nearly active enough, and recognizes that while five drugs may suppress viral loads better than three, five-drug treatment may not work because of intolerance or adherence issues. He also addressed the issues of effective first-line treatment, the chances of achieving total viral eradication, whether drug holidays are a strategy that should be pursued, and the outlook for salvage therapy. A table showing HIV/AIDS funding levels is included.
