  • Title: A new acronym, a new threat: IRU.
Journal: Proj Inf Perspect; 1999 Sep; (28):11. PubMed ID: 11367354.
    Abstract:
A new condition, Immune Recovery Uveitis (IRU), has been discovered in patients who are in remission from cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis as a result of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). IRU is an inflammation inside the eye which can result in significant vision loss. In addition, IRU seems only to occur in people who begin HAART, have significant increases in CD4+ cell counts, and have ended anti-CMV treatment. Although the cause of IRU is not known at this time, one theory suggests that the strengthened immune system attacks low level CMV replication in the eye. Several treatments for IRU have had limited success. A new study hopes to assess the incidence and prevalence of IRU, its causes, and treatment strategies.
