  • Title: Oral ganciclovir approved.
    Author: Gold D.
Journal: GMHC Treat Issues; 1995 Jan; 9(1):10. PubMed ID: 11367376.
    Abstract:
The Food and Drug Administration has approved oral ganciclovir (Cytovene) as a maintenance therapy for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections of the retina. As an alternative to the intravenous form of the drug, oral ganciclovir would free patients with CMV from the need for daily 2-hour infusions after the first two or three weeks of treatment. The drawback of oral ganciclovir is that it is somewhat less effective than the infused form, which delays CMV progression for several months.
