Title: Any toxic relief in sight? The induction/maintenance approach to therapy. Author: Gomez E. Journal: Newsline People AIDS Coalit N Y; 1998 Sep; ():33. PubMed ID: 11367488. Abstract: Induction/maintenance drug therapy is being tested as an alternative to sustained HIV treatment with highly toxic antiretrovirals. Induction/maintenance therapy is the primary method in which cancer patients receive chemotherapy, and it involves high doses of drugs followed by lower maintenance doses. In the case of HIV therapy, it is hoped that the lower drug dosages will be sufficient to maintain the undetectable viral loads that may result from the high aggressive dosages. The Geneva Conference presented early results of a Netherlands study that was designed to test the effectiveness of this HIV treatment. Preliminary results showed that the maintenance doses were inadequate to suppress viral replication over extended periods of time. Future studies are planned to test induction/maintenance therapies that are more aggressive.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
