Title: A Review of Commonly Used Intrauterine Contraceptive Devices. Author: Seymour EQ, Williamson H. Journal: Radiology; 1975 May; 115(2):359-60. PubMed ID: 1144752. Abstract: The radiographic appearances of the most commonly used intrauterine contraceptives devices are reviewed, and methods are suggested to determine the extrauterine location of these devices. Complications resulting from the use of these devices are also discussed. The radiographic appearances of 10 of the most commonly used intrauterine devices (IUDs) are graphically presented, and radiographic methods for locating missing IUDs are discussed. It is likely that the new IUDs, such as the copper T and copper 7, will replace first generation devices. Since radiography alone is not reliable for locating extrauterine IUDs, a sterile probe can often determine whether the device is present in the uterus. This can be confirmed by anteroposterior, lateral, and oblique radiographic views of the abdomen while the probe is in place. If a Antigon or Birnberg bow IUD is located outside the uterine cavity, it should be surgically removed. A roentgenogram is advised when a Majzlin spring device is removed to assure that no fragmented pieces remain in the uterus.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
