Abstract: The Ussing model has long provided the conceptual foundation for understanding epithelial transport mechanisms energized by the Na(+)-K(+)-ATPase. Plasma membranes may also use the vacuolar (V-type) H(+)-ATPase as the primary energy source of membrane and epithelial transport.
