    Abstract:
    The present article gives a history of Saisei-Gakusha, a private school of medicine founded by Dr. Tai Hasegawa in 1876 (the 9th Year of Meiji). It contributed greatly to the progress of medicine in Japan, producing distinguished graduates such as Drs. Hideyo Noguchi and Yayoi Yoshioka. There occurred later, however, a conflict between a group of doctors (Dr. Hasegawa among them) and the elitist professors at the School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo. Recurrent controversies between the two camps concerning issues such as the Bill of the Association of Medical Doctors, the Bill of Pharmacy, the Act of Professional Schools, and such, resulted in the prevalence of the latter over the former and ultimately the closure of the Saisei-Gakusha School of Medicine.
