  • Title: Reproductive technology: in Israel, law, religious orthodoxy, and reproductive technologies.
    Author: Shapira A.
Journal: Hastings Cent Rep; 1987 Jun; 17(3):S12-4. PubMed ID: 11644021.
    Abstract:
Shapira, an ethicist on the law faculty of Tel Aviv University, writes on reproductive technologies in Israel as part of a Hastings Center Report series on various countries' policies on clinically assisted reproduction. The social and political situation in Israel is complicated by a mix of religious orthodoxy and cultural pluralism. Shapira reports on the clinical and legal status of AID, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, ovum donation, the use of surrogates, the retrieval and freezing of ova, and experimentation with early embryos. These procedures are regulated by the Ministry of Health, with advice from its Supreme Helsinki Committee for Medical Experiments on Humans where in vitro fertilization and embryo replacement are concerned. Shapira concludes that while the Health Ministry's attempts at regulation of reproductive technologies are welcome, legislation is needed despite the political and religious controversies it is sure to generate.
