Abstract: It has come to public attention that the Eppinger Prize, established in 1973 by the West German Falk-Foundation, honors the name of a physician who experimented on inmates of the Dachau concentration camp and then committed suicide after being summoned to testify at the Nuremberg trials. Reactions from the foundation and from some physicians involved with the award have ranged from repudiation to attempts to separate Eppinger's "objectionable" methods from his contributions to science and his personal qualities.
