  • Title: World Health Assembly:
    Author: Turner J.
    Journal: Lancet; 1984 May 26; 1(8387):1172-3. PubMed ID: 11644284.
    Abstract:
Reaction to the solitary U.S. vote against the World Health Assembly resolution on drug marketing is reported. The head of the Tanzanian delegation argued that pharmaceutical firms are taking advantage of the lack of infrastructure in Third World countries, and he called such practices as the dumping of obsolete drugs crimes against humanity. World Health Organization officials, aware of adverse American reaction to a pharmaceutical code, believed that much could be achieved by using the Assembly's voiced feelings as a negotiating tactic. Dr. Halfdan Mahler, WHO's Director-General, urged developing countries to take a more active part in determining WHO policies.
