Abstract: The U.S. District Court ruled that an involuntary committed mental patient had no right to refuse the administration of psychoactive drugs under Wisconsin law. The statute concerned did not deny constitutional due process by providing that drugs could be administered against a patient's will, because the statutory scheme reasonably ensured that the antipsychotic medication was administered only in a professionally acceptable manner. The court also held that nonconsensual treatment is intrinsic to involuntary commitment. Prior to the final commitment order, however, each patient has the right to refuse medication and treatment, with a few exceptions.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
