    Abstract:
    Doctors practicing euthanasia in the Netherlands do so in violation of the law; however, they will not be prosecuted if they appear to have followed strict guidelines handed down by the Dutch judicial system. These guidelines require that there be an explicit and repeated request by the patient that leaves no doubt about the desire to die; that the mental or physical suffering of the patient be very severe with no prospect of relief; that all options for other care have been exhausted; that the patient's decision be well-informed; and that the doctor consult another physician. Institutional euthanasia protocols incorporating the above guidelines and the extent of euthanasia in the Netherlands are mentioned, and misconceptions of foreign commentators about the role of economic motives and inferior terminal care are refuted.
