    Abstract:
    The recently defined role for local protein synthesis during long-lasting synaptic plasticity has focused attention on the mechanisms underlying dendritic mRNA localization. The mRNA encoded by the immediate-early gene Arc is not only transported into dendrites, but localizes specifically to activated postsynaptic sites. This specific localization has now been shown to depend on local signaling through the NMDA receptor.
