  • Title: The IUD revisited.

    Abstract:
    Clinical experience with the Dalkon Shield IUD, especially among nulliparous adolescents, is briefly reported. Expulsion rates with other IUDs had been unacceptably high among nulliparas. However, there were only 6 expulsions and 1 pregnancy among 31 parous and 45 nulliparous women (age range 12-22) who received the Shield. Pain, bleeding, and/or pelvic inflammatory disease accounted for 6 removals. It is pointed out that the removal of the Dalkon Shield from the market leaves high-risk adolescent females with a very limited choice of contraceptives.
