    Abstract:
    In this case, the medical team learned about the Hmong cultural beliefs and collaborated with the family to design a plan of care that included their nonwestern medical practices. Improved health care for the child resulted from a partnership between the Hmong community, extended family members, cross-cultural nursing staff, and the nephrology team. This experience amended existing protocols for managing diverse populations and because of its success, the pediatric nephrology team was awarded the UCSD Healthcare Diversity Award in 1998.
