  • Title: An evolving life industry.
    Author: Solomon G.
Journal: AIDS Anal Afr; 1996; 7(3):1, 12. PubMed ID: 12157884.
    Abstract:
By February 1996, AIDS-related claims of more than R75 million had been paid by South Africa's life insurance industry. However, due to underreporting, total funds disbursed as a result of AIDS mortality were probably greater. Some form of control is needed to keep such claims and payments in check if the insurance industry is to remain viable. Life insurance offices around the world have responded in a variety of ways to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Excess HIV-related mortality, the debate over whether people should be tested for infection with HIV before being allowed to contract a life insurance policy, subjecting insurance policyholders to HIV tests every 5 years, dread disease contracts, insurance products for people with HIV, and medical products and managed care are discussed. The author rejects as unfair the notion that the life insurance industry should bear the greatest brunt of the costs of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A greater spread of responsibility is needed.
